4 Key Precautions for Using a Diesel Engine

1、Monitor engine oil pressure

When the diesel engine is running, the oil pump pressurizes lubricating oil to the friction surfaces of all moving parts and forms an oil film, preventing direct contact between mating parts and thereby reducing wear. During operation, always monitor the oil pressure. If the oil pressure is too low, stop the engine immediately for inspection and repair. Excessively high oil pressure can also damage the oil film and aggravate wear, so the cause should also be identified and eliminated in time.

2、Pay attention to temperature changes

The temperature of a diesel engine is mainly reflected in the temperature of the cooling water and lubricating oil. During operation of a forced-circulation diesel engine, the water temperature should be maintained at 70——90 degrees Celsius, and the oil temperature should be maintained at 70——80 degrees Celsius. If too high, it will damage the cylinder gasket, piston, and piston rings, reduce oil viscosity, and lower lubrication performance; if too low, it will increase fuel consumption and exhaust smoke. Therefore, always pay attention to the cooling water temperature during operation and eliminate abnormalities promptly.

3、Pay attention to maintenance during the running-in period

New or overhauled diesel engines must undergo running-in. Although the surfaces of mating and moving parts have a certain level of precision and finish, on a microscopic level they are still uneven, and the fit clearance is relatively small. The purpose of running-in is to make the mating moving surfaces smoother and the clearances more appropriate, preventing early wear. The running-in method is 50 hours of no-load operation, during which the speed should vary from low to high and the load should vary from small to large. Overspeed and overload operation are not allowed. After the running-in period, the crankcase oil must be replaced, and the crankcase and all lubrication passages should be cleaned, while the oil filter element should be cleaned or replaced.

4、Strengthen maintenance and servicing

Maintenance and servicing are the key to extending diesel engine service life. Daily maintenance, scheduled servicing, and regular inspections should be carried out, with重点 on whether cooling water and engine oil are sufficient and whether all parts of the diesel engine are in good technical condition. If there is a fault, it should be eliminated promptly. The “three filters” must be kept clean and unobstructed. When operating in rural environments with heavy dust, the air filter should be cleaned once a day. Other maintenance should also follow the specified procedures.
