Diesel engines are widely used in agricultural machinery in China, including tractors, combine harvesters, mini tillers, rice transplanters, plant protection machines, agricultural irrigation and drainage power equipment, as well as food processing and post-harvest handling machinery. According to the number of cylinders, agricultural diesel engines can be divided into single-cylinder and multi-cylinder models, with multi-cylinder models including 2-cylinder, 3-cylinder, 4-cylinder, and 6-cylinder diesel engines. According to power rating, agricultural diesel engines can also be divided into small, medium, and large diesel engines. Small diesel engines are mostly single-cylinder models with relatively simple structures and comparatively low prices. Due to their lower power output and smaller size, they are mainly used in small tractors, harvesters, mini tillers, and agricultural product processing machinery. Medium- and high-horsepower diesel engines are mostly 2-cylinder or 4-cylinder models, featuring more advanced structures and suitable for medium- and high-horsepower tractors, combine harvesters, and other large self-propelled agricultural machinery. Due to the special nature of agricultural production, agricultural diesel engines have their own characteristics and advantages, mainly including the following aspects:

(1) Strong adaptability. Because agricultural production environments are diverse, and the functions of agricultural machinery differ depending on the crops being grown, the same diesel engine needs to adapt to many different operating conditions.

(2) Good reliability. The seasonal nature of agricultural production is very obvious. The working period of each agricultural machine from start to finish is often short, but the workload that must be completed is very large. Agricultural production is highly sensitive to timing, which means the diesel engine must be able to overcome many adverse factors and reliably complete high-intensity operating tasks.

(3) Good economy. Because economic conditions and maintenance resources in rural areas are relatively limited, both operation and maintenance of diesel engines should fully take economic efficiency into account. Agricultural diesel engines should be designed to be low-cost, simple in structure, and easy to service and maintain.
