What Are the Differences Between Diesel Engines and Gasoline Engines

Update time: 2025-10-09    visits: 0

1. The difference between diesel engines and gasoline engines: the ignition methods are different. In a gasoline engine, gasoline vapor drawn into the cylinder is mixed with air, compressed, and then ignited by a spark plug. In a diesel engine, atomized diesel fuel sprayed by the injector is mixed with air and compressed, and the temperature of the mixture is raised by compression for self-ignition.

2. Compared with gasoline, diesel provides greater power, has a higher ignition point, and is less volatile. Because of these characteristics, the fuel economy of diesel engines is 30% higher than that of gasoline engines. In other words, for the same vehicle under the same driving conditions, if a gasoline vehicle consumes 10L of fuel, a diesel vehicle will consume about 7L.

3. The air-fuel mixing methods are different. A conventional gasoline engine mixes fuel with air outside the cylinder before entering the cylinder, whereas a diesel engine injects diesel directly into the cylinder to mix with air. The ignition methods are different. A gasoline engine requires a spark plug to ignite the mixture, while a diesel engine uses compression ignition. Power and torque are also different.

4. The following are the specific differences between diesel engines and gasoline engines: In terms of fuel supply and ignition methods, diesel engine fuel mixing and combustion are carried out inside the cylinder. High-pressure diesel is directly injected by the injector into the combustion chamber, where it mixes with air to form atomized fuel that is compressed and then burned. Therefore, structurally, a gasoline engine has a complete additional ignition system compared with a diesel engine.

5. A gasoline engine uses the electronic ignition device above the injector to generate an electric spark, which ignites the gasoline and achieves combustion. It requires electrical components for assistance. Fuel consumption: Compared with gasoline, diesel has greater power, a higher ignition point, and is less volatile. Because of these characteristics, diesel engines deliver 30% better fuel economy than gasoline engines.
